// Video of the day. when love sits down
“because we never stop silently loving those who we once loved out loud”
The artist is present – Marina Abramovic is a performance artist who began her career in the 1970s. Her work revolutionized visual art forms and it is her body that always was and is her subject and medium. This time though her heart may have been the part of her being touched the most.
In 1976 Abramovic met German artist Uwe Laysiepen (Ulay) with whom she then spent the next 13 years living out of a van travelling the world to explore their artistic individuals. And they fell in love. When their relationship had run its course they decided to separate but not without giving the audience a last performance. So, in 1988 Abramovic and Ulay walked the Great Wall of China from opposite sites. Each one went on a 2500km journey to finally meet in the middle of the wall for one last big hug and a last good-bye.
22 years later. For Abramovic’s MoMa retrospective ‘The Artist Is Present’ in 2010, she shared a minute of silence with each stranger who sat in front of her over the course of three months. One day Ulay arrived without her knowing and what then happened between the two is beyond words.
A few last words on the video: In my eyes it doesn’t need the music at all. And it also takes away a bit of the overpowering emotion I felt, now that I know, they already met a few weeks before this occasion in her studio loft. Means, it is not really the first time after their big Good Bye. Still, it is a moment of pure and intense togetherness.
